remembering Tuesday

It happened yesterday, it was our first day.  Outside more than in.  Let's celebrate!  Bring on the party hats people!

I didn't once think of the vacuuming not getting done or laundry not being washed or even making dinner on time. The hour upon hour outside, adding up to many (7!), smoothed out the raw, rough edges of a very difficult Monday.  Tuesday, instead, was a continual sigh of remembering how glorious fresh spring air can be.  Darn you winter for layering on forgetfulness.  Or thank you.

Toys, chalk, bikes spilled out of the garage, as if in a big yawn, awaking from winter.  Squeals of play echoed about the neighborhood as kids gathered in short sleeves.  Mud was sloshed, stubborn ice broken apart with baseball bats and golf clubs were swung at remaining piles of snow. Gardening tools were handled, and handfuls of pachysandra was pulled up to show lovely hardscaping underneath.

Party hats for sure.

This morning the whir of the washing machine is our background music, I am noticing floors in need of sweeping.  This morning it is raining, and we are waiting for the wintry mix that portends the big storm to come.  A foot of snow, they say.  We'll see.

In the meantime I am remembering yesterday.

just like that

Spring arrived.

The breezes have warmed just enough to let me know that it is likely safe to pack away the hats and gloves this time.  Not like last month, when I packed them away, and had to unpack them again several days later.

Sun graced the first soccer games of the season allowing us to daydream of the shirtsleeve weather arriving.

The daffodils and tulips are winding down their days of beauty.  Freshly cut grass brilliantly declaring its intention of now taking on the color of the day.

The kids have splurged their carefully counted coins on water toys.  Soaking wet clothes and boots have been followed by necessary warm baths.

Pal is big enough for the wagon.  And his sister's sun hat.  Maybe his own is in order.  I'd like to sew one.  But I'm off to the playground, so it will have to wait a bit longer.

summer

It is beginning to look alot like summer around here.

Inside the house anyway.

While I have been lamenting the lingering cold and persistent flurries, my kids have taken matters into their own hands.  They have skipped right over spring and are jumping into summer by swimming in the bathtub, and playing on an indoor soccer field, and making various playgrounds with piles of pillows and long lines of dining room chairs.

And those colanders and cake pans?  Skates, naturally

I am in love with today

I am in love with today.

That thought came to me, and stayed with me as each moment of beauty kept joining the next.  The blue skies conspired with the sunshine to give us warmth enough to be in t-shirts, and sit on the grass and pause to play with our shadows.  The fresh air, tinged with the smell of maple, was restorative and playful.  Perfect.

Perfect.

Perfect for strolling slowly and picking up fistfuls of rocks.

Perfect for tasting sap straight from the tree and syrup hot from the stove.

Perfect for tromping through the fragrant woods and helping gather more.

Then this.  This might be the sweetest moment of all.

Just after I took this picture, my son patted the bench next to him, indicating for me to sit down with him.  And I did.  Not just sit down, but lay down and rest my head in his lap.  We talked.  He took pictures.  I felt the sunshine soak deeply into my body.  We stayed that way for a long, long time.

Perfect.  And in love with today.

so there is this

According to my calendar spring has been around about six weeks. But the spring I have met this year has been shy and reclusive.  Rain has endured, and in some spots in the backyard, reigned for days on end.

Some trees in the neighborhood are reluctant, revealing only teeny dots of green.  Still others stark black branches.

My dog wood tree has been sluggish in joining the party.  Just last week we wore coats, and I admit mittens and scarves, to play outside.

Though yesterday felt different.  The sky was confidently blue.  The wind warmer.

I drove with my car windows down.  Smelling grilling meat and pollen and freshly-spread mulch.

And I loaded Munchkin and Lovey in the car and headed toward spring.  Real spring.

Spring of rolling down grassy slopes.

Spring of digging fingers into dirt patches.

Spring of exploring plants and paths and woods.

Spring of running, running, running across stripey park lawns.

The spring I have been patiently awaiting.
Welcome, so glad you are here.
