this moment {cabin fever}

In Amanda's words: "A Friday ritual. A single photo - no words - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember."

P.S. Yes, I totally know how close his little head is to that iPad!  Don't worry, I moved him after the picture!

this winter, these kids

Three of the coldest, snowiest winters on record occurred smack dab in the middle of my childhood.  My recollection of winter always included mountains of snow, layers of socks, and days upon days of winter white that became the backdrop for our play.

As I grew older winter never seemed quite so cold. So snowy.  So magical.  I wondered if my memory was betraying me, my recollections inaccurate.  Now I realize that the winters of my youth were as I remember, and were the exception.  Lucky me.

So while many have complained about the weather this winter (and I haven't been without a complaint or two of my own) I mostly have welcomed this winter knowing that it is giving to my kids the magic I've deeply known.

The magic that happens when you step into snow and it comes up past your knees, you find icicles long enough to be swords, you laze away snow days in your pajamas, you build snowmen that last weeks, you build tunnels and mazes and trails and forts, you come to know your back yard for its various sledding paths.

All of it magic.

And this Mama will happily endure the piles of wet snow clothing, chilly noses, frozen car doors,  cabin-fevery negative degree days, and mud that is sure on its way as the snow piles melt, in exchange for all of that magic.

Absolutely.

this morning

This morning spent as it should be.  Outdoors.  No need to go further than our back yard.

And the beauty of it catches in my throat.  Every time.

Last night's snowfall made a perfect playscape, with warmish temperatures making it a nice long morning of fresh air and icicles, eating snow and snow angels, sliding and swinging, tromping and playing.

Warm enough I could go mitten-less and take pictures.

So there's this...

I finally got a good shot of this guy.  We've been watching him for a couple of weeks. His name is Fatty McSquirrel.  He is literally bigger today than he was two days ago.  He is, after all, feasting on (and sharing with his friends) the bird seed we are putting out for the birds.  Sure his ingenuity and dexterity is impressive.  But come on (said in voice of GOB Bluth) save some for the birds.

easing

When our oldest was born, we held no routine for years.  He slept anywhere, anytime, often in my arms.  I easily nursed on the go.  Meals were eaten when ready, not worrying about a bedtime or other structure.  Naptime?  Shnaptime!  It worked easily.  For.  One.  Child.

As our oldest grew (and our family grew) we were forced into the necessary routine that comes with starting Kindergarten.  Then some carefully selected activities were added.  Where there once was a family that didn't worry much about consistency, we've grown into a family of six that thrives in a predictable schedule.  My staying home full time made for the ultimate shift in striving to keep each day simple.

I've come to appreciate the routine, as well as rely upon it to give rhythm to our days.  I have found that the rhythm gives a sense of comfort and predictability to me, and to our kids.  So much so, that we kept to the usual early bedtime for all but two of the nights of the recent holiday break from school.  It was wonderful.  (Did I really just say that?  The 20 year old me just read that last paragraph and laughed out loud!)

Now don't think for a minute that there isn't spontaneity in our household, there is.  We've just become more adept at picking those times carefully.  Honey and I have learned our lesson (over and over and over) that a stop at the beloved ice cream shop before dinner just doesn't end well for us.  Ever.  A recent Friday night family meal at a friend's house, when we let the kids stay up well past their usual bedtime, garnered us four children in meltdown mode on the ride home.  Not fun.

So you will completely understand how unsettling the last several weeks have been around here.  The holiday break became the transition back to school, then became cleaning the lingering Christmas mess, then became sick day upon sick day, then became a long holiday weekend, then became snow days.  Hrrpf!

No wonder I have been so tired.  I've been expending all of my energy breathing deeply, to remain calm, to keep some semblance of routine, despite the turn-stile of happenings that would like it otherwise.

So here I am declaring an easing.  An easing back into the goodness of our routine.  The good that comes when, feeling comfortable and confident, we can indulge in the fun that naturally happens around here.

The fun of fresh air and homemade hot chocolate.  Fun of learning new things and being creative.  The fun of finishing good books and cuddling up with Honey to watch Market Warriors on PBS.  The fun of saying "yes" to markering your faces.  The fun of dancing with wild abandon in the living room to Munchkin's favorite Puppy Dog.

The fun of, ahem, our routine.

truth be told

I was ecstatic to hear the predictions from the meteorologists to expect blizzard-like conditions.  I kept waiting anxiously, watching for snowflakes, hoping to feel a bit of the chill.

This all may sound crazy, I know.  But, truth be told, we've had a bit of a cranky start to 2012.  Oh nothing serious, but I think a full-blown case of "we've-had-such-fun-and-too-many-treats-and-not-enough-sleep-itis" has caught hold of our little family.  Grown-ups and kids alike.

Our holidays have been fabulous, for the first time staying close to home.  We've had some extra day trips and treats, which have been much fun.  But this tired Mama is definitely in need of some down time and fresh air.

And this blizzard is just the cure.

Fresh air, albeit a bit chilly, but fresh no less.

And the cold bringing a whole new realm of fun for the kids.  Anything to freeze over that swamp that has been created in our backyard from record rains, that continued into the holidays.  Humbug. (But I won't mention the rain.  I've promised my husband.  That prince who has listened to me, the eternal glass is half-full gal, complain about the rain for weeks now.)

So blizzard, welcome!  Bring your snowflakes big and fluffy.  Bring your fresh air that seems to dance its own dance as we breathe.  Bring your piles of snow-drenched hats and gloves and boots.   I'll figure out a system of keeping up with the piles soon enough.  Bring your warm drinks and your post-play snuggles to get warm. Welcome!  Give us forts to build, sidewalks to shovel, slick spots on which to sled.  Bring us the just-right antidote for the New Year crankies, for all of us.

could it be

This is what we had here a week ago.

Today it was 68 degrees.  The windows were wide open.  The kids were playing outside in shorts.  Amazing.

Even more amazing is the amount of sticky icky awesome mud left from all of the melting.  Who could resist it?  Not my littles!

Wishing you a warming and wonderful weekend!

40 words, February 26

Cooped up all afternoon, the sun was getting low when we finally convinced them to go out.
Then we couldn't lure them back in.
The foot of snow that had fallen, now shoveled into mounds, was much too compelling.

a wee bit icy

In all of my 39 years I have not seen anything like it.

I have seen ice storms.

I have seen sunny days.

I have never seen the two coincide quite this way.

An unassuming ice storm happening as we sleep, followed by a brilliant blue-skied sunny as the day is long day.

Trees normally brown are coated with sequins as if dressed for New Year's Eve.  Ladies in swishy gowns, arms extended out offering diamonds and glitter.

Some gracefully bowed down from the weight of their unending tinsel as if greeting Her Majesty.

And it is majestic.  White as far as the eye can see, glowing neon advertising nature's infinite surprise.

The beauty beckons, daring you not to succumb to the sparkle and shine.

It causes you to pause underneath the laden trees, creaking as a comfortable farmhouse, drip-dropping cold onto your face and camera lens pointed upward.

It causes you to ride with your car window down, in 28 degree weather, camera on lap, not wanting to miss a single breath-taking view,  afraid it will have melted the next pass this way.

A contrast to the usual February gray.  Even different from the jewel-toned fall that too can mesmerize.  Those colors come each year.

But these.  These cut crystal sparkle of Waterford on display, is for a limited time.

Once every thirty-nine years.
