Earlier this week, we celebrated a very special birthday in our house. March 20 is the birthday of Mister Rogers.
Yes, that Mister Rogers. The ultimate champion of kindness and respect and love for people.
I only vaguely remember watching Mister Rogers' Neighborhood as a kid, though I know I must have liked it.
Well as a grown up, I love Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. With a capital L. O. V. E.
Watching episodes of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood as a grown up has changed me. For the better.
He speaks to everyone with a compassion that is undeniable. Oh, I wish to be that compassionate.
He is genuine. He is caring. He is special.
And anytime you watch an episode of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, you are reminded that you, too, are special. It just isn't kids that need that message. Mamas who are having a tough day need that message too.
During his life Fred Rogers' also did quite a bit of writing, both for children and adults. Each book a treasure in its own way as he promotes respect and understanding. I have a copy of You are Special which is a compilation of his wisdom. Almost every line in that book has been underlined by me, because almost every line speaks to my heart as a mother, and as a person.
Incredible, he was.
This past summer our family had the great fortune to meet some of the neighbors in his neighborhood.
Mayor Maggie.
Mr. McFeely.
Neighbor Abor.
They were amazing.
Looking at each person whom they met. Really looking. Talking with them, asking their name and wanting to know more about them. Taking their time with each and every person.
They not only made you feel special, they affirmed you are special.
And as they signed autographs for you, each child got to sign an autograph for them!
Sure making the kids feel special.
Check out the Fred Rogers Company. The good people there carry on the spirit and legacy of Mister Rogers in so many ways. Trust me, you'll be a better person for it.
Sounds really inspiring - it's not a show we have down here...but it sounds genuinely special :-)

How fantastic! I'd like a signed autograph of Mr. McFeely! It was always they showed I like most as a kid (even better than Sesame Street) and I just hope you can buy some episodes of dvd because I'd like my son to grow up with it too and I know for a fact it's not to be found on Norwegian television.
ReplyDeleteUsed to be my favorite show...I named my horse after one of the characters! I may have to tune in as an adult!
ReplyDeleteThat is amazing! We love Mr. Rogers too...
ReplyDeleteGreat people are born on March 20th. Ella celebrated her 6th birthday that day. She is a child of compassion, warmth, and kindness - all the things Mr. Rogers was and is. Ella had Mr. McFeely visit her preschool a little over a year ago and he was awesome with the kids. It will be a day she will never forget!
